Building a Business as Strong as Your Craft

Tired of the Feast-or-Famine Cycle? I Get It.

Growing up in a family of construction workers, I saw firsthand the pride and artistry that goes into building something real. But I also saw the other side: the constant stress of the feast-or-famine cycle. Their business was like an EKG machine—full of terrifying peaks and valleys that had nothing to do with their talent.

That feeling of uncertainty never left me. It instilled a fierce desire to help skilled tradespeople build the predictable, sustainable success they deserve.

This led me to start a marketing agency, but I quickly hit a wall. As a generalist shop, we were stretched thin. I was telling clients, “Marketing 101 is being very targeted,” yet we weren’t practicing what we preached. The lightbulb moment came from one of our favorite clients—a deck builder. We created a dedicated marketing system just for him, and as we refined it, his business grew. Predictably.

And Deck Builder Marketers was born from that single idea: to make a bigger impact by going all-in on one industry.

“April and her team are the best! As someone who is passionate about the decking industry, it’s refreshing to see a company hold that same passion. April and her team have always went the extra mile to make sure I am understanding the process.”

— Andy Henley, Hen-House Decks

Giving Back to the Industry

My goal is to lift up the entire deck-building industry. I don’t believe in gatekeeping.

This mission to share knowledge is the most rewarding part of my work:

My Book: I wrote The Deck Builder Marketing Playbook because I wanted to give you a practical, straightforward guide for getting better leads and clearer ROI.

Our Podcast: On We Love Deck Builders, we share usable playbooks, not theory. It’s all about what works right now in the field.

My Column: In my regular column for Deck Specialist magazine, “Market Yourself,” I break down the marketing strategies that are working right now.

Industry Events: You’ll find me on the floor at DeckExpo and other trade events. I love collaborating with groups like NADRA to interview builders, share knowledge, and help owners solve real-world problems.

Community Building: I helped launch and coordinate NADRA’s Southern California Networking Event from its inception. As co-host, I bring builders together to create a space where they can share ideas, tackle challenges, and grow as a collective.

“The opportunity of working with April is hard to put into words. The tapestry of her marketing knowledge has afforded me the launch of an amazing website and clarity around strategic steps to success. I appreciate our relationship as we continue to demonstrate like minded achievements in the industry.”

— Lainie Sleppin

“April is an amazingly helpful person… Her knowledge of marketing is incredible and working with her is easy and inspiring. I highly recommend April and her services to anyone looking to get serious about organizing and expanding your business to the next level!!”

Building a Business and a Life

When I’m not coaching my team or talking shop with builders, you’ll find me on a dirt bike, surfing, scuba diving, or just trying to keep up with my two teenagers. My family is my “why,” and we make it a priority to get outside to play and explore the world.

I believe you can build a thriving business and have a life you love. It’s the future I want for you, too.

A well-built deck is solid and made to last. Your business should be, too.

We’re on a mission to impact the lives of 300 deck builders, helping them build the business they deserve. If you’re ready to be one of them, let’s talk. I offer free strategy sessions where I’ll help you reverse-engineer a plan of attack for your business. My goal is to provide real value and direction, regardless of whether you’re ready to hire an agency.

It’s the first step toward building the business you deserve.

Let's do this.

“I’m grateful I found April. After our strategy session, I knew exactly what I needed to do to generate the kind of leads I’d been aiming for.”
